The field of Systems Engineering was born at Penn in 1953. It began with a series of seminars at the Moore School, at the request of local industry to help address the growing complexity in military systems. Since that beginning, complexity has become a central feature of many aspects of our lives: in transportation, in manufacturing, in telecommunications, in environmental control, in financial institutions, etc. Designing effective systems in the face of growing complexity is still our mission.
